Three Monsters: The path to Self Growth

If you ever take a journey down your daily journal, you would find certain traits that set you back and harm your trajectory to success. Now, if you are busy and don’t have time to write a journal (aka no time for self-discovery) but want to discover these traits (I like to call them monsters), you should skim this post.

Learning from other people’s mistakes is always the best option, and in this post, I would talk about these three monsters you should be mindful of. Awareness is the key to any action. 😇

Let’s dive in!

Monster 1: Perfectionist Monster

Consider this as a perfect example of too much of anything is bad.

You want things to be the best in class but are wasting a lot of time making things best. You become hard on yourself and waste more than time and resources on small things.


Your mind always appreciates this monster because you know you’re trying to do the best. Looking for it and finding it is hard. The symptoms are procrastinating and missing deadlines because, for you, the ‘best’ tag is on a higher priority than honouring a deadline.

Your output is reduced because you start becoming hard on yourself and criticising every single move of yours.


I wasn’t very far away from the grip of this monster. I used to judge my articles one letter at a time, which would slow me down drastically. I would not complete articles because I thought an excellent article must need more polishing. Well, I wasn’t wrong, but there’s a way to everything.

I changed my approach and started focusing on completion rather than excellence.

Looking forward to now, I write an article once in a flow and have expectations that it would suck. It’s okay to suck at your first draft. But completing the article allows you to give a second look and be judgemental so that your second draft is better. Repeat it once more time you get a great article.

Publish it and take feedback from more people to improve the quality of the article with every subsequent post.

Take action and seek progress with subsequent improvements. You can use this recipe in every aspect of your life.

Monster 2: Advice Monster

People like to help but stepping a step back and questioning your motive is always good. This monster positions yourself as a hero/leader with all the solutions. If you don’t get rid of this monster, you will lose many connections and friends.


If someone comes and asks for advice and you start them giving a solution without understanding their situation, then my friend, you not knowingly are in the grasp of this advice monster.

Never give advice unless asked. Unsolicited advice usually ends up annoying the person more than anything.

Another symptom is you love to help others without being asked to help.


It is very unconscious of people to help other people without realising they might be doing unfruitful things. The solution to this lands in you asking more and understanding the situation, and be genuinely interested in the person.

Don’t listen to reply but listen to understand.

This would help them feel supported, and also sometimes, people solve their problems by talking to a person. Well, what’s better than empowering people?

If you have a habit of doing so and want to get out of it, one quick tip is to take time and reply. Taking time helps you to think, understand the person well and craft a reply that helps the other person.

Monster 3: People Pleaser Monster

Who likes people pleasers? Probably no one. The need for external validation to get that sweet dopamine becomes one of the traits not appreciated in any industry or any relationship.


This might be shocking to you. If you feel uncomfortable saying ‘NO’, then you might already be eaten by the monster. People must understand to say NO, and it’s very critical to help you grow.

One more sign is that you prioritise the emotional needs of other people and you throw your emotions out the window. You might often apologise so that the person in front of you doesn’t get upset, but you might be getting sad in the process.

If this sounds like you, you might take a step back and think about getting rid of the monster.


The simple solution to this problem is understanding and embracing your emotions. Tell NO when you want to, and don’t burden yourself with ‘what other people will think?’

The only thing matter is that you end your day with positive emotions.

The monsters are standing in your path to growth. The path is hard, but worth every second you put into to grow. The process takes time but think of this as an investment in conquering your emotions to become a more efficient self.
